The Doe Fund is a not-for-profit organization that uses innovative work and housing programs to empower city residents to break the cycle of homelessness, welfare dependency and incarceration. Starting in Harlem and expanding to Brooklyn and other areas of the City, the Doe Fund's primary goal is to provide a holistic, structured environment in which homeless men and women can restore their self-esteem and regain power over their lives.
Since 1990, Ready, Willing & Able, the Doe Fund's largest and most visible program, has provided highly efficient maintenance efforts to the City. These include: sweeping streets, collecting and bagging refuse, removing graffiti and keeping the sidewalks clean throughout the year. Today the Doe Fund supports our maintenance program with 180 workers who help clean our telephone kiosks by removing stickers and picking up trash that may surround them.
For years, we have provided funds to support the good work of this organization; they help us keep our plant clean and neat for the City. In addition, we have hired Doe Fund graduates to join our permanent work force, and we have a policy of providing first interviews for operations positions to Doe Fund graduates. With the help of Doe Fund personnel, we have built and donated Van Wagner Park, on-site facility at the Doe Fund's HQ in Brooklyn. This is a genuine park for the relaxation and enjoyment of the Doe Fund personnel and participants.
